Wainfleet.

Wainfleet is a rural lakeshore township on the north shore of Lake Erie, sitting between Port Colborne to the east and Dunnville to the west, drained by the Welland River. The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority manages the two anchor outdoor sites — Wainfleet Bog Conservation Area, one of the largest remaining acidic peat bogs on the Niagara Peninsula (a Provincially Significant Wetland and Area of Natural and Scientific Interest), and Long Beach Conservation Area, a Lake Erie shoreline campground and beach park inside the township.
A long quiet stretch of Erie north shore runs along Lakeshore Road and Quarry Road, connecting east to the Welland Canals Parkway and the Greater Niagara Circle Route at Port Colborne. Wainfleet is roughly an hour from Hamilton and an hour and a half from the GTA via the QEW and the Niagara highway grid.

Hiking
Wainfleet Bog Conservation Area carries a boardwalk and looped trail network through one of the largest remaining acidic peat bogs on the Niagara Peninsula, a Provincially Significant Wetland and Area of Natural and Scientific Interest managed by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. The walking is flat, the surface is easy, and the habitat — pitcher plant, sundew, peatland flora — is genuinely uncommon on this part of the Lake Erie plain. Long Beach Conservation Area adds short shoreline walks at the Lake Erie edge of the township, sand-and-cobble underfoot.

Long Beach Conservation Area is the NPCA-operated frontcountry campground inside the township, sitting on the Lake Erie shoreline with direct beach access from the campground. Reservations run through NPCA's booking system on a seasonal calendar — typically May through October. It's a quiet alternative to the busier Niagara campgrounds further east, with the trade-off of fewer amenities and a more rural setting.

Wainfleet Bog Conservation Area is the regional draw for low-intensity nature visits — a documented eBird hotspot anchored on peatland-affinity species and rare-plant interpretation (pitcher plant, sundew). The Friends of Wainfleet Bog steward the site and the active restoration program around it. Long Beach Conservation Area complements the bog with Lake Erie shoreline birding — waterfowl, shorebirds, and migrants along the north Erie shore through spring and fall.

Long Beach Conservation Area's Lake Erie beach is the named, NPCA-managed swimming anchor — a sand-and-cobble shoreline accessed through the conservation area, day-use fees apply. The Township of Wainfleet maintains additional small public access points along Lakeshore Road that supplement the conservation-area beach. Lake Erie is shallow on the north shore here, which means warmer water through summer than the deeper Great Lakes; it also means storms develop quickly when the wind comes onshore.

Lake Erie's north shore through Wainfleet sits inside Fisheries Management Zone 19, the Ontario zone that covers one of the most productive warmwater fisheries in the Great Lakes — smallmouth bass, walleye, and yellow perch from shore and small craft along the lakefront. Inland, the Welland River runs slow and warm through the township, holding largemouth bass, pike, and panfish. An Ontario fishing licence is required and the FMZ 19 seasons and limits apply.
