Wainfleet Bog Conservation Area is a flat boardwalk-and-trail loop through one of the largest remaining acidic peat bogs on the Niagara Peninsula — a Provincially Significant Wetland and Area of Natural and Scientific Interest, managed by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. The walking is short, easy, and the habitat is genuinely uncommon on this part of the Lake Erie plain.
The brief.
The bog sits north of the Lake Erie shoreline inside the Township of Wainfleet, accessed by NPCA's day-use trailhead. The surface is a raised boardwalk over sensitive peat with marked side trails on firmer ground; staying on the boardwalk and marked trail is required because the peat is fragile and parts of the site are still under active restoration with the Friends of Wainfleet Bog.
Day-use only; no camping; pets on leash. The boardwalk is walkable year-round on most days.
For longer shoreline walking, Long Beach Conservation Area at the Erie edge of the township offers short sand-and-cobble walks. May through October is the easiest hiking window.
