Welland.
Welland is a mid-sized Niagara city built around its canal — but not the one you'd expect. When the active Welland Ship Canal was rerouted east of the city in 1973, the bypassed downtown channel was redeveloped into the Welland Recreational Waterway, and the result is a flatwater course running straight through the centre of town.
The Welland International Flatwater Centre runs sprint canoe/kayak, rowing, and dragon-boat racing on it; the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority manages Chippawa Creek Conservation Area on the Welland River corridor west of the city; and the Welland Canals Parkway Trail — a segment of the Greater Niagara Circle Route — follows the recreational canal through the urban core, connecting Lake Erie at Port Colborne to Lake Ontario at Port Weller. Welland is roughly an hour from Hamilton and an hour and a half from the GTA via the QEW and the Niagara highway grid.

Walking & Strolling
The Welland Recreational Waterway path runs flat and paved alongside the flatwater course through downtown — a walking corridor with regatta and rowing activity to watch, lift-bridge views, and access to Merritt Island and Merritt Park, the riverine parkland between the canal channels in the city centre. The downtown mural collection is layered along the waterway, which makes the same walk also a public-art route. For a quieter, more rural walk, Chippawa Creek Conservation Area on the Welland River corridor west of the city offers short trail loops through NPCA conservation lands.

Chippawa Creek Conservation Area is the NPCA-operated frontcountry campground anchored on the Welland River corridor west of the city — drive-up sites, standard NPCA infrastructure, a stocked fishing pond on site, and short rural trails. Reservations run through NPCA's booking system on a seasonal calendar — typically May through October. It's a quieter alternative to the busier Niagara campgrounds along Lake Erie, with a more rural and inland setting.

The Welland Canals Parkway Trail follows the recreational canal through the centre of the city — a paved multi-use trail and a segment of the Greater Niagara Circle Route, the roughly 140-kilometre canal-corridor loop that connects Welland to Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and St. Catharines. Welland sits in the middle of the loop and is a natural staging point for full-loop riders or shorter day rides north toward Thorold or south toward Port Colborne. The riding is flat, paved, and signed, with regular access points along the canal corridor.

The Welland International Flatwater Centre runs on the bypassed downtown stretch of the Welland Canal — a straight, sheltered, lane-marked flatwater course that hosts sprint canoe/kayak, rowing, and dragon-boat racing and training, including national-team camps and international regattas. Outside posted regatta and training blocks, the course opens to public paddlers, and the Welland Canoe Club and South Niagara Rowing Club run year-round programming on the same water. The Welland River through the city adds slow warmwater paddling for casual outings, and Chippawa Creek Conservation Area on the river corridor west of town offers small flatwater paddling on the conservation area pond. This is Welland's distinctive water — most Canadian cities don't have a purpose-built flatwater venue running through downtown.

The Welland Recreational Waterway and the Welland River both run warm and slow through the city, holding largemouth bass, pike, panfish, and carp under FMZ 19 regulations — bank fishing is straightforward off the recreational canal's multi-use path, and small-craft access is easy from the same water. Chippawa Creek Conservation Area west of the city has a stocked fishing pond managed by NPCA, with day-use fees and seasonal access. An Ontario fishing licence is required and the FMZ 19 seasons and limits apply.

Welland's identity is the canal — but the recreational corridor, not the active shipping route. The original downtown channel, bypassed in 1973 when the modern Welland Ship Canal was rerouted east, is now the recreational waterway, and the lift bridges, canal-side buildings, and downtown street pattern that grew up around the original channel are still in place. The Welland Murals, a long-running downtown public-art series, layer the canal corridor with painted history. For active lock-watching — the Lock 7 viewing complex and the flight locks 4-5-6 where ships climb the Niagara Escarpment — head north to Thorold; Welland's heritage product is the recreational corridor running through the centre of the city.
