West Lincoln is the rural southwest corner of the Niagara Region — geographically the largest municipality in Niagara, with twenty-two small hamlets including Smithville, Wellandport, Caistor Centre, St. Ann's, and Silverdale spread across nearly 388 square kilometres of farmland south of the Niagara Escarpment.

Smithville sits roughly halfway between Hamilton and Pelham along the former Highway 20 corridor, with the Welland River running east through Wellandport and the Twenty Mile Creek headwaters draining the township's northern slope. Chippawa Creek Conservation Area, on the Welland River at Wellandport, anchors the township's outdoor footprint with 156 campsites, the 10-hectare Dils Lake reservoir, and a 1.1-kilometre wheelchair-accessible boardwalk loop.

In Smithville, the West Niagara Fair carries a county-fair tradition that began in 1878 and continues each weekend after Labour Day. This is rural agricultural Niagara — back-roads farmland and a Mennonite-influenced country layer rather than wine country (which sits north in Lincoln) or escarpment hiking (which lives in Pelham and the Bruce Peninsula).
