Amherstburg.

At the mouth of the Detroit River where it meets the western basin of Lake Erie, Amherstburg packs an unusual density of national heritage sites and migration habitat into a small Essex County town across from Detroit. Fort Malden National Historic Site preserves the British stronghold from the War of 1812 — site of the August 1812 Brock–Tecumseh meeting that led to the Siege of Detroit.

The Amherstburg Freedom Museum, with the 1848 Nazrey African Methodist Episcopal Church, interprets the Underground Railroad terminus on the Canadian side. Holiday Beach Conservation Area, a globally significant Important Bird Area on Lake Erie, funnels between 600,000 and 750,000 migrant birds and an average of 75,000 hawks each fall, counted from a 12-metre tower run by the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory.

The Detroit River itself is the only river with both Canadian and American Heritage River designations, runs through the only International Wildlife Refuge in North America, and hosts a spring walleye run that draws as many as 10 million fish from Lake Erie. A short drive south of downtown Windsor; a few hours from Toronto via the major highway corridor.
