01 — Abstract

The Township of Pelee is Pelee Island and a cluster of smaller islands in the western basin of Lake Erie — the southernmost inhabited point in Canada, reached by the Owen Sound Transportation Company's Pelee Islander and Pelee Islander II from Leamington and Kingsville on a roughly 1 hour 30 minute crossing, daily April 1 through December 7, 2026. The island holds three nature reserves at its tips and middle — Fish Point Provincial Nature Reserve at the southwest, Lighthouse Point Provincial Nature Reserve and the 1834 lighthouse remains at the northeast, and Stone Road Alvar Nature Reserve on the south side.

Pelee Island Bird Observatory has documented 314 of Ontario's 501 bird species on the island, with 239 at Fish Point alone. Pelee Island Winery's vineyards run 700+ acres across the interior.

The 30 km Great Lakes Waterfront Trail loops the shore on flat island roads with deliberately lowered speed limits to protect the federally listed Lake Erie watersnake. This is not Point Pelee National Park — that is on the mainland in Leamington.
