Inside the city, the 4 km GeoTime Trail carries 18 geological signs, the 12 km Westside Trails network passes through the Forest Hills Woodlot, and Bechtel Park adds 3.2 km of multi-use path. North of the city, the Region of Waterloo manages 16 forest tracts (435 ha total) including Petersburg, Sudden, Sandy Hills, and Doon, all permitting walking and cycling. Flat to gently rolling moraine terrain throughout — dense network rather than destination peaks.

From the park, the 8 km Laurel Trail runs partly paved through the University of Waterloo campus past the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery to Columbia Lake. The 5.5 km Iron Horse Trail is the spine — paved, on a former CP / Grand River Railway right-of-way, opened October 5, 1997, and reportedly carrying more than 250,000 users a year between Kitchener and Waterloo. The 76 km Walter Bean Grand River Trail loops the Grand through Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, and Woolwich, with a 6.2 km Cambridge segment on the Trans Canada Trail. The 3.4 km Farmers Market Trail (also TCT) runs from the Research and Technology ION station to the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market. The Forwell Trail (1 km) and a 7.5 km TCT segment fill in the urban grid.

Laurel Creek Reservoir at Laurel Creek Conservation Area is the in-town flatwater anchor — canoes, kayaks, SUPs, sailboats, and windsurfers only (no motorized boats), with a gravel boat launch operating May 1 through October 15. The Grand River along the eastern edge of the city offers flatwater paddling on the 1.5 km RIM Park frontage and through the Bridgeport reach. The Grand here is a Canadian Heritage River with a 6,800 km² watershed; not whitewater inside Waterloo (the gorge sections are upstream at Elora and downstream of Paris).
