01 — Abstract

Guelph is a mid-sized city at the confluence of the Speed and Eramosa rivers in Wellington County, laid out by John Galt in 1827 on an unusual radial street grid centred on St. George's Square.

The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate — Joseph Connolly's 1888 Gothic Revival church on Catholic Hill — was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990 and anchors the downtown skyline. McCrae House, John McCrae's birthplace at 108 Water Street, is a separate National Historic Site, and the Goldie Mill ruins on the Speed River carry the remains of a 19th-century limestone grist mill ruined by fire in the mid-20th century.

North of the city, Guelph Lake Conservation Area covers about 1,623 hectares around a reservoir on the Speed River behind the 1976 Guelph Dam — the city's main camping, swimming, and lake-paddling anchor, and home to a Nordic ski centre in winter. Inside the city, the Speed and Eramosa rivers thread Royal City Park, Riverside Park, and Goldie Mill, and the University of Guelph Arboretum runs 165 hectares of free interpretive trails on the east side of campus.

Guelph sits on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit and the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Attawandaron peoples.
