Mapleton is a rural Wellington County township amalgamated in 1999 from Maryborough and Peel, anchored by the village of Drayton and the smaller villages of Moorefield, Alma, Rothsay, and Glen Allan. The Conestogo River rises in moraine country here and flows southwest into Conestogo Lake — a 7.3 km² Grand River Conservation Authority flood-control reservoir on the Mapleton/Mornington boundary, dammed since 1958, where Mapleton's main outdoor recreation concentrates.
The 1902 Drayton Opera House on Wellington Street South in Drayton is the founding venue of Drayton Entertainment, whose professional summer-stock theatre season has run since 1991. Mapleton sits on traditional Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Neutral (Attawandaron) territory, covered by the Between the Lakes Purchase of 1792.
