01 — What to know

The brief.

Reliable Canadian Shield snow cover holds the season together from mid-December through early March in most years. The Leaf Lake network sits inside the Park and a daily Park vehicle permit is required to access it.

The trailhead is a short drive west of Whitney through the East Gate at km 55.8. Backcountry-XC on the frozen lakes and the Old Railway Bike Trail corridor follows standard winter-travel discipline — open water risk on shoulder-season ice, no marked grooming on most off-network routes.

Black-fly and mosquito season pulls down summer trail use from late May through mid-June; the corridor is much quieter on early-shoulder ski days than it is on summer hiking days.
