The lower Grand River runs flat, slow, and paddleable through Caledonia, Cayuga, and Dunnville on its way to Lake Erie at Port Maitland — a corridor that takes canoes, kayaks, and SUPs through the heart of the county. Byng Island Conservation Area near Dunnville is the standard launch into the lower Grand.

The lower Grand inside Haldimand County is a flatwater corridor — current is slow, reaches are wide, and the river takes canoes, kayaks, and SUPs comfortably between Caledonia, Cayuga, and Dunnville. Byng Island Conservation Area is the GRCA-managed launch and stage for paddling into the lower Grand near Dunnville with calm water and wetland edges suited to flatwater.
The river widens approaching Dunnville Dam — paddlers must portage or take out before the dam; the segment downstream of the dam toward Port Maitland opens onto the Grand River mouth and Lake Erie. Best paddling season is May through September; spring high water and Lake Erie wind exposure at the mouth are real factors.
