Ottawa sits on the Ontario shore of the Ottawa River, with the Rideau River and Rideau Canal cutting south through the city to Mooney's Bay. The National Capital Commission manages the Greenbelt — a roughly 200 square kilometre arc of farm, forest, wetland, and trail at the city's edge — plus the 236 km Capital Pathway that links the Ottawa River shoreline, the Rideau River, and the Rideau Canal into a single multi-use network.

Inside the Greenbelt, Mer Bleue protects 3,500 hectares of sphagnum bog (a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance since 1995), Stony Swamp carries 40+ km of trails, Pinhey Forest holds the area's only inland sand-dune system, and Shirley's Bay has 270+ recorded bird species. Through downtown, the Rideau Canal — a Parks Canada–managed UNESCO World Heritage Site — runs as a 7.8 km outdoor skating surface for roughly 50 days a winter when conditions allow.

The city sits on the unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation, two hours from Montreal and a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Toronto.
