Heritage & Culture.

Wilno, on Highway 60 about 10 km west of Barry's Bay, was founded in 1858 as Canada's first Polish settlement; St. Mary's Church on the hilltop is the visual centre of Polish Kashub heritage in Canada.

South at Combermere, Madonna House — a Catholic lay apostolate community founded in 1947 by Catherine Doherty — runs as an active pilgrimage destination, and Barry's Bay anchors a railway-station museum and a waterfront park named for Avro Arrow test pilot Janusz Żurakowski.

01 — What to know

The brief.

The three heritage anchors are spread along the Highway 60 / Kamaniskeg corridor and accessible by car from Barry's Bay. Wilno is a small hilltop hamlet with St.

Mary's Church (active Catholic parish, public-access exterior; interior visits depend on parish hours), Wilno Heritage Park below the church, and Wilno Tavern on Highway 60. Madonna House at Combermere is an active religious community, not a conventional tourist attraction — visitors are welcome at the public chapel, gift shop, museum, and gardens, but the rest of the property is a working community; check madonnahouse.org for visitor protocol and hours.

In Barry's Bay, the Railway Station Museum is in the restored former Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway station; Zurakowski Park on the Kamaniskeg waterfront is named for Polish-born test pilot Janusz Żurakowski (CF-105 Avro Arrow), who lived in Barry's Bay. Best season is summer, but all three sites have year-round drive-up access.
