01 — Abstract

London sits at the Forks of the Thames, where the north and south branches of the Thames River meet in downtown Ontario. The Thames Valley Parkway — a paved, non-motorized multi-use path approximately 40 km long — follows the river through the city, threading Springbank Park (140 ha) and Storybook Gardens, Harris Park at the Forks, Gibbons Park near Western University, and Kilally Meadows on the north branch.

Upstream on the north branch, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority manages the 1,012-hectare Fanshawe Conservation Area on Fanshawe Lake — the city's main camping, swimming, and flatwater paddling anchor. Downtown, the Heritage Conservation District runs through Victoria Park to Eldon House (1834) and Museum London at the Forks; Banting House National Historic Site at 442 Adelaide Street North marks the residence where Frederick Banting conceived the idea behind the discovery of insulin in October 1920.

Boler Mountain, on the southwest edge in Byron, runs a small downhill ski hill, tubing, and a summer treetop adventure park. London is a couple of hours from Toronto and from Detroit/Windsor along Highway 401.
