01 — Abstract

Thunder Bay sits at the head of Lake Superior at the mouth of the Kaministiquia River, on the rugged Canadian Shield north shore of the lake. Inside the city, the Blacksheep Mountain Bike Club builds and maintains the Trowbridge Forest network on the north end — 30 km of mountain-bike-optimized singletrack and 25 km of Nordic doubletrack across the Shuniah Mines silver-mining grounds, the Kinsmen Park skills hub, and the newer Masterplan gravity zone.

Up the Highway 61 corridor, Kamview Nordic Centre grooms 32+ km of classic and skate trails plus 6.9 km of lit night-ski trails open to 9 p.m. The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority manages 10 conservation areas across 2,500 hectares within an hour of the city, and Prince Arthur's Landing on the central waterfront anchors a 271-slip municipal marina alongside the Spirit Garden, Boulevard Lake's 5 km loop sits in a 650-acre municipal park, and Anemki Wajiw — Mount McKay — is the sacred mountain of Fort William First Nation immediately south of the city.
