Hiking.

The Avon Trail Association's long-distance route runs through Stratford between St. Marys (where it meets the Thames Valley Trail) and Conestogo (where it meets the Grand Valley Trail), with a Stratford Side Trail tracing the length of the Avon River through the city.

T.J. Dolan Natural Area, on Stratford's west side, carries a riverside woodland loop on Carolinian-fringe terrain — willows, poplars, and maples — with side trails ranging from short walks to a longer river loop.

01 — What to know

The brief.

Stratford is the headquarters of the Avon Trail Association, the volunteer steward of the long-distance route. The Stratford Side Trail tracks the Avon River through the city and connects into the main Avon Trail's St.

Marys-to-Conestogo corridor; the route crosses both public and private land along the way and the Avon Trail Association's published maps are the authoritative source. Inside Stratford, T.J.

Dolan Natural Area is a woodland loop with multiple side trails, free to access from a small parking area near the Festival Theatre grounds. Wildwood Conservation Area, on UTRCA-managed land split between the Stratford and St.

Marys boundary, adds a regional trail network as the closest large outdoor anchor to Stratford. May through October is the easiest hiking window; trail sections at Wildwood and on the Avon Trail also support winter use.
