Heritage & Culture.

The Lower Brewers, Upper Brewers, and Jones Falls lockstations sit on the township's eastern boundary as functioning Parks Canada heritage locks — the Rideau Canal has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007 and a National Historic Site of Canada. Inland from the canal, Sydenham, Verona, and Battersea carry mill-town heritage along the County Road 38 corridor; the township itself was amalgamated from four pre-1998 townships.

01 — What to know

The brief.

The Rideau Canal was completed in 1832 and has been continuously operated since; the canal is a National Historic Site of Canada and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. The lockstations on township-bordering waters — Lower Brewers, Upper Brewers, and Jones Falls — operate during the navigation season (roughly mid-May through mid-October) under Parks Canada.

Sydenham (the township seat, on Sydenham Lake), Verona (Highway 38 main street), and Battersea (Loughborough Lake mill village) each retain heritage character from the pre-1998 township era. South Frontenac sits within the Algonquins of Ontario land-claim area; Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation at Sharbot Lake (in Central Frontenac) is the nearest Algonquin community.

Indigenous-led visitor programming was not surfaced at substrate level for South Frontenac specifically; visitors should follow Algonquins of Ontario guidance for community-led experiences.
