Paddling — Sea & Coastal.

Sheltered sea-kayak and SUP launches start from the Penetanguishene Town Dock at the head of Penetang Bay, where Severn Sound's inshore waters open north into the inner 30,000 Islands archipelago — one of the world's largest freshwater archipelagos. From Penetang Bay a multi-day paddler can reach Beausoleil Island and the southern islands of Georgian Bay Islands National Park.

01 — What to know

The brief.

The best season is June through September; July and August carry the most sheltered conditions on the inner 30,000 Islands. Inshore Severn Sound stays sheltered from prevailing weather; exposure increases beyond the harbour mouth where open Georgian Bay weather and shipping traffic matter.

The official Georgian Bay Islands NP DayTripper boat shuttle and visitor anchor is at Honey Harbour to the north (Township of Georgian Bay), not Penetanguishene; multi-day paddler access to Beausoleil from Penetang Bay is real but unofficial. Sea-kayak skill matched to open-water Georgian Bay conditions is required for any longer crossing.
