Lake Simcoe sits immediately south of Orillia in Fisheries Management Zone 16 — among Ontario's most-fished winter lakes, with FMZ 16 regulations governing lake trout, whitefish, yellow perch, and herring (cisco). Lake Couchiching sits immediately north in FMZ 17 and carries muskie, walleye, smallmouth bass, and northern pike.
Tudhope Park on the Lake Simcoe shore and Couchiching Beach Park on the Lake Couchiching shore are the two main public access points from the city.

Lake Simcoe (FMZ 16) is best known for its winter ice fishery — January through March is the iconic season, with hut and shoreline access concentrated south of Orillia toward Innisfil and Beaverton; the Tudhope Park access is the Orillia anchor on the lake. Lake Couchiching (FMZ 17) carries warmer-water species (muskie, walleye, smallmouth, pike) with open-water seasons May through October.
