Freshwater Fishing.
The Wingham dam on the Maitland River is the upstream limit for migratory steelhead — a hard upper boundary for the run, with no fish ladder. The water just below the dam holds steelhead through the spring and fall migration windows and smallmouth bass through summer.
Downstream, the Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area opens additional river and tributary frontage along the Maitland and Belgrave Creek.

The Maitland River steelhead fishery falls under Fisheries Management Zone 16; the river section between County Road 4 and the Highway 21 bridge in Huron County is governed by FMZ 16 species and season rules that anglers should consult through the Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary before each trip. Steelhead windows run roughly mid-October through December and the fourth Saturday in April through mid-May; smallmouth bass through summer below the dam.
Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area opens free, year-round access to fishable Maitland River and Belgrave Creek frontage downstream of Wingham.
