Crawford Lake Conservation Area's reconstructed Wendat (Iroquoian) longhouse village stands on the excavated footprint of a 15th-century archaeological village — visitors walk through full-scale longhouse reconstructions on the site of the original posts. The 1820s ruins of Hilton's mill at Hilton Falls add a 19th-century industrial layer where Sixteen Mile Creek crosses the escarpment.
The brief.
The Crawford Lake Iroquoian Village is interpreted by Conservation Halton on the actual archaeological footprint of a 15th-century Wendat village; programming covers village life, longhouse construction, and the broader Iroquoian/Haudenosaunee history of the region. The Wendat Nation today is centred at Wendake in Quebec; the village programming is interpretive heritage rather than a Nation-led visitor experience.
Hilton Falls preserves the stone-foundation grist-mill ruins of Hilton's 1820s operation at the base of the cascade. Downtown Milton's Main Street carries 19th-century commercial frontage and the Mill Pond.
May through October is the easiest window for outdoor heritage walking; Crawford Lake village programming runs year-round.
