01 — Abstract

Gananoque sits at the western edge of the Thousand Islands archipelago on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River, where the Gananoque River reaches the river — the gateway town to the central Admiralty Islands and Lake Fleet Islands cluster of Thousand Islands National Park.

The Gananoque Municipal Marina at 21 Bay Road is the closest mainland boat-access point to those island clusters, identified as such by Parks Canada; the 9-route Thousand Islands Paddling Trail, coordinated by the Frontenac Arch Biosphere from Kingston downstream to Brockville, runs through Gananoque waters at its central node. The 38 km separated, paved 1000 Islands Parkway Bike Path runs east from town along the Thousand Islands Parkway to Butternut Bay as a section of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail.

Inside town, the 12 km Gananoque Trail System connects Joel Stone Heritage Park, Confederation Park, and Kinsmen Park along the Gananoque River across three return-to-trailhead loops. The Thousand Islands Playhouse occupies the heritage 1909 Gananoque Canoe Club on the waterfront, and the 1000 Islands History Museum sits on the former site of the 1889 Thousand Island Railway Station.

Gananoque sits on traditional Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee territory.
