Swimming & Beach.
Bay Beach in Crystal Beach is the named, Town-operated public beach on Lake Erie inside Fort Erie — sand shoreline, lifeguards in summer, parking and access fees in season. The Lake Erie north shore here is shallow, so the water warms earlier than on the deeper Great Lakes.
The brief.
Bay Beach operates seasonally — Town fees and lifeguard coverage run roughly Victoria Day weekend through early September. The shallow Erie north shore is a real comfort advantage in June and early July; it also means storms develop quickly and onshore winds bring waves and turbid water while offshore winds bring calm clear conditions.
Smaller township-maintained access points along the Erie shoreline supplement Bay Beach. Crystal Beach the community sits on what was historically the site of the Crystal Beach Park amusement park (closed 1989); the present-day product is the residential community plus the Town-operated public beach.
Best swimming is June through early September.
