Essa.
Essa is a rural Simcoe County township straddling the Nottawasaga River corridor, with the village of Angus at its centre and CFB Borden — Canada's largest Canadian Forces training base — just to the west. The Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority is headquartered inside the township at the Tiffin Centre for Conservation in Utopia (8195 8th Line), a 300+ acre property with 11 km of looped trails through wetlands, forests, meadows, and ancient lake beds.
The Pine River joins the Nottawasaga at Angus, and according to NVCA fisheries biologists the Upper Nottawasaga and the Pine River likely represent the largest source of wild Chinook salmon in Georgian Bay. The Thornton-Cookstown Trans Canada Trail — 15.6 km of rail-trail between the villages of Thornton and Cookstown — anchors the township's cycling and cross-country ski offer, while the Ganaraska Hiking Trail's 50.5 km Mad River Section runs west out of Angus toward Glen Huron, where it meets the Bruce Trail.
Essa sits within the 1923 Williams Treaty territory of the Anishinaabe Chippewa of Simcoe — Beausoleil, Georgina Island, and Rama First Nations (the Chippewa Tri-Council).

Hiking
The Tiffin Centre for Conservation in Utopia carries 11 km of looped trails across 300+ acres of wetland, forest, meadow, and ancient lake bed at NVCA headquarters; the Hawk and Maple Valley trails are wheelchair accessible (all-terrain wheelchairs available free with pre-arrangement). The 50-acre Utopia Conservation Area adds 2 km of accessible trail along Bear Creek, anchored by the historic Bell's Mill. West of Angus, the Mad River Section of the Ganaraska Hiking Trail runs 50.5 km through the Angus and Glencairn corridor toward Creemore and Glen Huron, where the Ganaraska meets the Bruce Trail. Inside Angus, the Pine River Trail (1.5 km) and Rippon Trail (1 km) link Peacekeepers Park, the Nottawasaga Fishing Park, and LeClair Park along the river.

The Thornton-Cookstown Trans Canada Trail runs 15.6 km on the abandoned rail corridor between the villages of Thornton and Cookstown, crossing Cookstown Creek; the Essa trailhead is at Robert and William Streets in Thornton. The corridor is part of the Trans Canada Trail network and is shared with walkers, cross-country skiers, and snowmobilers. The Tiffin Centre's 11 km of looped trail is open to cycling; surfaces are mixed dirt and grass through wetland, forest, and meadow.

The Township's accessible canoe and kayak boat launch on the west side of the Nottawasaga River at Angus Community Park (6 Huron Street) is free and opened in May 2022 — the put-in for the NVCA's published Nottawasaga River Canoe Route from Angus downstream toward Edenvale. The Angus-to-Edenvale section runs roughly 19 km in 4–5 hours through the Minesing Wetlands approaches with five portages of 80 to 300 metres around logjams; the river is a remote wilderness corridor and slippery banks plus shifting logjams require local knowledge before launching.

The Nottawasaga River runs north through Essa and the Pine River joins it at Angus — and according to NVCA fisheries biologists, those two stretches likely represent the largest source of wild Chinook salmon in Georgian Bay. The salmon run begins in August and peaks in September; rainbow trout (steelhead) run spring and fall, with a special no-kill section on the Nottawasaga between Angus and Alliston where all steelhead must be released. The Township operates the Nottawasaga Fishing Park in Angus on the west bank, accessed from the Pine River Trail, with parking and river access.
