01 — Abstract

Brighton sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario at the western end of the Bay of Quinte, wrapped around Presqu'ile Bay and the Presqu'ile peninsula — a sand-spit tombolo that Ontario Parks runs as Presqu'ile Provincial Park. The park anchors the region: Owen Point's sand spit pulls in shorebirds in late summer; the Marsh Boardwalk and the protected gull-and-tern islands carry waterfowl and nesting colonies through the IBA-designated bay; the 1840 Presqu'ile lighthouse and the Friends of Presqu'ile Lighthouse Interpretive Centre sit on the peninsula's southern point.

Inside town, Brighton's heritage Main Street fills with the Applefest crowd on the last full weekend of September, and the Proctor House Museum (1853) anchors a small in-town heritage cluster. Brighton sits a short drive east of the GTA on the Toronto–Montreal corridor and at the eastern end of the Parks Canada–operated Murray Canal, which links Presqu'ile Bay to the Bay of Quinte and the Trent–Severn Waterway.
